Things to see and do in this region of Norway with your car hire.

Unusual for Norwegian cities, Fredrikstad has a fortress, in fact it has several. On 'Gallows Hill' the Kongstein Festning is a place of embankments, turrets, walls and stockades and is great for exploring whatever your age. If you are lucky, you might catch one of the summer evening concerts held in the grounds. The old part of the town is known as Gamlebyen and dates from a similar period to the fort. Here you will find moats and a drawbridge. Built in the late 17th century it protected the trading links with mainland Europe. Many of the original buildings are preserved such as the old prison and the stone storehouse, which is now a ceramics gallery. Take a drive in your car hire across the River Glomma where you will find yet further evidence of past defences and forts as well as beaches and pleasant walks.
