Drive in Reading with Sixt

Reading is a large town in the county of Berkshire, playing an important role in English history over the centuries. During medieval times, the now ruined 12th century Reading Abbey in the town centre was an important site for the Royal family, and the town boomed during medieval and Tudor times as a result of its cloth trade. It also was a centre for the English Civil War in the mid 1600s and the Revolution of 1688. The history of Reading is fascinatingly documented in the Museum of Reading, situated in Reading's Victorian Town Hall on Blagrave Street. It traces the history of the town and area right from the first Roman city at nearby Silchester. A visit to Silchester, located approximately 20 minutes from Reading by car, is highly recommended for history fans as these ruins contain remnants of the Roman Amphitheatre and several town walls. Today there is a host of shopping and entertainment opportunities within the town centre, especially at the Oracle Centre where visitors can enjoy films, shopping or just passing the time at some of the riverside restaurants and cafes. It is also well known for the rock and indie Reading Festival that takes place every summer. Car hire in Reading provides flexible access to the town and local area, and easy transport to beautiful places in the countryside such as Mapledurham House and Watermill, 4 miles west of Reading on the River Thames. Mapledurham is a charming village with traditional buildings and cottages as well as an Elizabethan Mansion, older manor house Mapledurham Gurney and working Watermill which produces flour for sale with wheat ground by the traditional millstones.
